A promising start at the Thai GP, with Fantic Racing Lino Sonego securing a double Top 5 on the grid for the opening race of the 2025 Moto2 World Championship.
The first race weekend of the 2025 campaign is underway at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram. After securing direct access to Q2 on Friday, both Fantic Racing Lino Sonego riders managed to finish the qualifying session in the Top 5 – a first for the Italian team since joining Moto2 in 2023.
Aron Canet secured a strong third place, just 205 thousandths off the fastest time, and will start from the front row on Sunday. Last year’s Thai GP winner is ready to fight, aiming to kick off the season in the best possible way.
His new teammate, Barry Baltus, continues to impress. After leading for most of the Q2 session, he just missed out on pole position in the final minutes. In his first race with Fantic, the young Belgian will start from the second row, in fifth place on the grid.
Aron Canet:
“We are right where we know we can be, now we need to focus on Sunday. I feel good on the bike, but the race will be long. It will be important to manage the tyres well in order to be strong until the end. The goal for tomorrow is only one – to try and win!”
Barry Baltus:
“A positive weekend so far! We have worked a lot, but most importantly, we have worked well, and I am happy about that. We know what we were missing in the end, but even starting from the second row, we are in a perfect position for tomorrow. We have worked on race pace, and I think we have made a good step forward. Tomorrow will tell – the race is always a different story. In any case, it is amazing to start fifth in my first race with Fantic Racing Lino Sonego. I would like to thank the whole crew for their great work—let’s hope we can make the most of it tomorrow!”
Roberto Locatelli, Fantic Racing Lino Sonego Team Manager:
“It was a great Saturday! For the first time, we placed both riders in the Top 5. This doesn’t mean we can relax – quite the opposite; it motivates us to keep improving. Tomorrow’s race will be very tough— we will have to face many strong rivals, and the high temperatures won’t make things any easier. We need to manage the pace well to be at our best in the final laps. Forza Fantic!”
