Giogia dei Marsi (AQ), 30 aprile 2023
The riders of the Italian Motorally Championship were back in action on Saturday 29, and Sunday 30 April at Gioia dei Marsi (AQ), where, under the direction of the Moto Club Sirente, the 3rd and 4th rounds of the season were held. The route proved very demanding, testing the riders and their navigational skills. On Saturday, there were two special stages of 18 and 34 kilometres, respectively, for a total distance of 210 kilometres. On Sunday, the riders covered a total of 165 kilometres, with two selective sectors of 31 and 27 kilometres.
Winning debut in the Motorally for the World Enduro Champion, Britain's Jane Daniels, who finished the first day 22nd overall and first in the Women's class. Daniels reconfirmed herself as unbeatable in the women's class also on Sunday, when she finished 27th overall.
For Alex Salvini, it was a weekend of ups and downs, with a challenging race on Saturday, conditioned by some riding and navigation errors, and a nice revenge on Sunday, when the former enduro world champion proved to be the fastest overall, losing the victory only because of a one-minute penalty taken due to the malfunction of the lighting system that caused him to slip down to 4th place, finishing however on the second step of the podium of the D-450 class.
Satisfaction for Fantic also in the Marathon class with the double second place of Tiziano Internò.
The next appointment with the tricolour motorally championship will be at Umbertide on 3 and 4 June.
The riders' comments
Alex Salvini: "On Saturday, I made one disaster after another, but on Sunday, I made up for it; I drove carefully, without forcing and reading the notes well. I won the first special, I lost the second one by half a second, and I would have won the overall, but I got a penalty for the headlight malfunction that made me miss the victory. Anyway, I got on the podium in my category, which is a shame because it would have been nice to end the weekend with a win. Sorry, but it's the rules."
Tiziano Internò: "It was an excellent race here in Abruzzo, I did not make any navigational mistakes, and I tried to keep a steady pace without any uncertainties, which allowed me to get a double second place, which I am satisfied with".
Jane Daniels: "I had a lot of fun, I had never raced motorally before because of my Enduro World Championship commitments, but I must say that it is very challenging to ride and navigate. On Saturday, I made a small mistake on the first special, and on Sunday, I made a mistake on SS2, but in the end, I am satisfied with both the overall result and the win in the Women's class. Unfortunately, I will not be able to be at the start of the next event due to the concurrence with the enduro races, but we will definitely see each other in the future."
