Moto2 GP of Portugal, qualifying: Vietti fourth, Gomez close to Q2

Fantic Racing colors in evidence in the qualifying of the Portuguese GP in Portimao: Vietti at full throttle on the last lap before the checkered flag burns six other riders and gets fourth. Gomez shows improvements at his debut on the Lusitanian circuit.

Portimao, March 25th, 2023

Encouraging start of the season for the Fantic Racing team. Celestino Vietti got the fourth time in 1'42.661, taking the second row. Good result for the rider from Turin, who is not physically at the top after the fall during IRTA tests. Cele is determined for tomorrow, despite the two long-lap penalties he will have to pay from last year's race.

Good result also for our rookie Borja Gomez who was close to Q2 on one of the most complicated circuits of the championship. The 18-year-old from Murcia, at his debut in the world championship, is improving day by day, and tomorrow will fight for the points zone.

Celestino Vietti"We did a good job with the team, and I am happy, especially for the progress made during tests and here this weekend.

I took some risks during a good lap, and maybe we could have started further ahead. We need to figure out a couple of things to manage the race at best, but we started the season with an excellent qualifying. We can be competitive tomorrow despite the two long-lap penalties."

Borja Gomez"We finished the first qualifying of the year close to Q2. Portimao is a tough track, and I'm learning a lot. I'm so happy to work with this team. Danilo, Paolo, and Christian did a great job setting up the bike in the best way. I'm enjoying this wonderful experience and can't wait to come back on track for tomorrow's race.".

Stefano Bedon (Team Manager)"We started off on the right foot, and it wasn't entirely obvious against so many strong riders. This year, the level in Moto2 is very high, and we'll have to fight every race. Shame about the two long lap penalties that Cele will have to face; we calculated that this could affect more than 7 seconds throughout the race, and in this class, it's a lot. But that's okay. The championship is long, and it's important to be always competitive and get points in all the races."
