Stunning first Moto2 win for Aron Canet at the Portuguese GP

An amazing Sunday for the Fantic Racing Team in Portimao bringing home the first victory of the season and taking over the lead in the Moto2 rider standings for the first time ever with Aron Canet.

In only his second Grand Prix with Fantic Racing, Aron Canet clinched his first ever Moto2 race win and took over the world championship lead. The 24-year-old Spaniard, a six-time race winner in the Moto3 class, had already 20 podium finishes to his name since moving up to the Moto2 class in 2020. On a memorable day in Portimao he finally stepped on top of the podium, giving Fantic its second GP victory in only its second season in this highly competitive category.

Starting from the front row, Canet tried to manage the tyres in the beginning of the race. Lap after lap he then pushed hard to get himself into the top positions. He took over the lead with 11 laps to go and went on to win his first ever Moto2 race.

Aron Canet:

“Unbelievable! We improved from the Qatar GP and we did it today. I want to thank all my Fantic Racing team, my sponsors and my fans for always supporting me year after year. I felt I could win from the beginning.

We started a little bit slow and we pushed hard for the rest of the race. After 15 second places finally I got the win. That brings a lot of emotions, I can’t even explain what I felt on the last corner. I’m super happy and I’m going to enjoy it but tomorrow I will immediately prepare the next race with my Team.”

On the other side of the box, it was an unlucky race for Xavi Cardelus. He started well and gained a position during the first laps. The pace was good but while trying to pass other riders he crashed out on lap 10.

Xavi Cardelus:

"The moment I felt better on the bike of the whole weekend, a small crash didn’t allow me to complete the race. With the team we’re improving in many aspects. Now it’s time to recharge the batteries, work hard and get ready for the Texas GP”
